New Research

We are thrilled that it has been announced that this year, cottonseed will be part of the Northern Territory Department of Agriculture and Fisheries' research program, 'Crops for Cattle'. This is a significant milestone, as it demonstrates the department's confidence in cottonseed as a beneficial feed and nutrition source for cattle.

The Crops for Cattle program aims to integrate northern cropping and cattle production systems, with the majority of feed being sourced locally through northern cropping and feed mills. The project focuses on improving dry season weight gain through the use of various locally grown crops and supplementary feeds. Economic analyses will be conducted to determine the most cost-effective feed and cattle price combinations for profitable feeding strategies. These findings will help foster local markets for northern crops and increase the overall rate of cattle production.

Key outcomes of the program include:

The project is built around three main components:

Feeding Trials

Economic Modelling

Carbon Credit Potential

While the project is still in its early stages, we are excited to follow its progress and will update you with new developments as they become available. In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about the Crops for Cattle program, please click the links below.
